Yachtclub Oberrhein Karlsruhe e.V.
Yachtclub Oberrhein Karlsruhe e.V. is a long-established water sports club on the Upper Rhine with its home harbour in the former customs harbour at Rhine kilometre 354.3 RU in Au am Rhein / Rheinstetten-Neuburgweier. The harbour offers a guest pontoon of about 25 metres as well as electricity, water, showers, toilets and a clubhouse that is not catered. Since 1975 the club has run a recognised DMYV training school for the recreational craft licence for coastal and inland waters, the Lake Constance skipper licence and the UBI radio certificate. A youth section for ages 4 to 18 runs events throughout the year, complemented by club and lecture evenings and seasonal season-opening and closing festivities. Since its founding in 1964, community life on the Rhine has shaped the programme for members and guests.
History
On 12 November 1964, twelve water sports enthusiasts founded Yachtclub Oberrhein in the Bernadushalle in Mörsch. The home harbour was set on the old Rhine grounds behind the Neuburgweier customs harbour in Au am Rhein. The harbour initially comprised six boat halls for eleven boats; after anchoring with steel cables, Badenwerk supplied a power line to the former bunker at a cost of 860 DM. The joining fee was then 100 DM and the annual membership fee 120 DM. On 4 March 1965 the YCO was entered as number 304 in the register of associations at the Karlsruhe local court. As early as the year after founding, the yacht school ran a licence course although a licence was not yet mandatory. Since 1975 Yachtclub Oberrhein Karlsruhe e.V. has been a recognised training centre of the German Motor Yacht Association; on 2 December 2023 it received Premium Training Centre status. In 2014 the club celebrated its 50th anniversary and in 2019 the harbour festival for its 55th anniversary. Club life includes season opening and closing, club and lecture evenings, ski trips and care of the harbour facilities including club ship Olga. At the annual general meeting on 8 February 2020, among others Ralf Schnepf was elected second chair and Sabrina Lemke youth officer. About 80 members and guests attended the 2020 season opening; in 2025 Horst Friedrich was named honorary member.
