History

The harbour basin in Bullenhausen was created as part of major dike works carried out five years after the 1962 storm surge. Until 1972 the harbour was used only by a few fishermen, as neither pontoon nor club facilities existed for recreational boating. Mayor Erich Sievers then initiated the founding of a sailing club. In April 1972 the Yachthafen Bullenhausen interest group was founded with 32 members. Thanks to members' labour and Willi Kruse's donation of a pontoon system, harbour expansion was completed within weeks and the 1972 season opened in June. On 19 February 1974 the group became Yacht Club Bullenhausen; the club joined the German Sailing Association, the sports federation and the Lower Saxony sailing association, and membership had tripled since 1972. A youth section was formed and the club bought a wooden Pirat dinghy and soon a second boat; over the following 25 years about 200 young people learned to sail. Youth groups sailed on the Eibe, the Schlei and lakes in Holstein and competed successfully in Upper Elbe regattas. Over the decades harbour facilities were continually improved: higher dolphins in 1983, power and water lines through the dike in 1986, a safety railing in 1987, inauguration of the floating clubhouse in 1991 and a work boat in 1993. In 2012 the club celebrated its 40th anniversary with a regatta and festival. Club life combined harbour work with sport and regatta sailing on the Upper and Lower Elbe; members carried the club burgee to the North and Baltic Seas, the Mediterranean and across the Atlantic. Summer harbour festivals, winter costume balls and launch celebrations shaped social life. The club's youth work was honoured by the Regional Sailing Association Elbe-Weser, and by 2022 the club had existed for 50 years.
