Yachtclub Zell am See
Yachtclub Zell am See (YCZ) is a sailing club on the northern shore of Lake Zell in Salzburg province, nestled between a nature reserve and a bathing meadow in the Prielau district. The grounds include a clubhouse with club restaurant, changing rooms, showers, boat shed and terrace, plus 60 land berths, 40 mooring and 10 buoy berths, two slipways, an L-shaped floating jetty and a rotating crane. Focus and yardstick regattas, weekend youth training from May to September and the annual youth sailing week shape the programme for beginners and advanced sailors. Founded in 1959, the club continues a long alpine-lake sailing tradition and provides juniors with Optimists, 420s and Lasers among other boats.
History
Sailing on Lake Zell began long before the club was founded. Around 1880 a print by Püttner shows summer visitors in a flat boat with an auxiliary sail on the northern shore. Josef Linemayer bought keelboats at Lake Tegernsee, fitted them with sails and is regarded as the first owner of a rental sailing boat on Lake Zell. In the 1920s Georg Oberschneider brought one of the first dinghies to the lake; 10er and 15er racing dinghies and H-dinghies followed, and around 1940 the first O-dinghy. In the early 1950s the Pirate class arrived and the first sailing regattas were held. After preparatory talks, Yachtclub Zell am See was founded in 1959. Facilities and racing grew further; photo galleries document the construction and extension of the clubhouse. From the 1980s onward YCZ sailors achieved many national and international successes, including Olympic medals for Roman Hagara and Hans Peter Steinacher in Tornado and titles in A-Cat and Flying Dutchman.
