RYYC Rheydter Yachtclub e.V.
RYYC Rheydter Yachtclub e.V. is an unusual watersports club located inland in Mönchengladbach-Rheydt without its own pontoons or harbour; members mainly use cruising areas in the Netherlands and on oceans worldwide. The club has the Spö407 clubhouse as a meeting place, the motorboat club ship Minto and the sailing club ship RA RA, which is available free of charge to new interested members. The programme includes monthly club evenings, maritime evenings, grill and club festivals, cruise reports and support for the DGzRS sea rescue service. Memberships are offered for children, young people, adults and partners; nautical licences can be obtained on request through the club’s nautical department. Founded in March 1971 by eleven watersports enthusiasts, the club celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2021 and had 63 members with 13 boats as of 01.01.2026.
History
In the 1970s a handful of watersports enthusiasts, almost exclusively motorboaters, came up with the idea of founding a watersports club. After clarifying the name and purpose, the Rheydter Yachtclub was founded in March 1971 by eleven enthusiasts. The RYYC grew considerably and at times had more than 100 members. Even today there are no own pontoons or harbour; boats were formerly kept almost exclusively in Dutch waters, while members now sail on oceans worldwide. To attract new interested people, a club ship was acquired for free use. On 18.11.2023 the RYYC celebrated its 50th club anniversary at Hotel Elisenhof; the date had been postponed from 2021 due to Corona. Mayor Hajo Siemes represented Lord Mayor Felix Heinrichs. A club chronicle of about 270 pages with many photos was compiled for the anniversary. As of 01.01.2026 the club has 63 members with 13 boats.
