Wassersportverein Biggesee e.V.

Wassersportverein Biggesee e.V. (WSVB) is a long-established sailing club on Lake Bigge in the Sauerland region between Olpe and Attendorn. At Sonderner Kopf, the club operates a harbour with three pontoon systems and around 100 berths, plus a clubhouse with catering, a terrace and a youth room. The programme includes sailing courses for beginners and advanced sailors, active youth work with training and regattas, a cruising circle and boating licence courses. The club organises numerous yardstick regattas such as Blaues Band and Pannenkloepper, offers guest berths and a club training boat for taster sessions. Founded before 1964, WSVB combines sailing, community and nature on the reservoir operated by Ruhrverband.

History

In the early 1960s, the landscape around Olpe changed dramatically: construction in the Bigge valley, earthworks, bridge pillars and diverted roads transformed the area. After the new Biggesee reservoir was impounded – built as the Bigge dam between 1956 and 1965 – the first sailing adventures began from the still undeveloped WSVB site on open grassland. The Wassersportverein Biggesee was founded before 1964, more than 60 years ago. The club grew with the artificial lake in the southern Sauerland between Olpe and Attendorn, which Ruhrverband operates as a water supplier for the Ruhr area and for river regulation. From those early days on the bare shore, a lively sailing club developed with harbour, clubhouse and active racing and youth programmes. Today WSVB looks back on six decades of club history on Lake Bigge while collecting historical photos and film material from the early years of Olpe harbour.
