Wassersportverein Heidelberg-West 1926 e.V. is a combined canoe and sailing club in Heidelberg, located on the Neckar river in the Bergheim district. Within the sailing section, the main focus is on sailing education, youth development and club regatta activity; the website names Optimist, Sailhorse, ILCA 7, Teeny, 420er and 29er among the boats used. Club life includes trial sessions, shared training formats and seasonal events on a technically demanding river sailing area. A key priority is youth support together with training opportunities toward the German Sport Boat Licence, with theory in winter and practical units starting in April. Since 1926, the club has developed continuously and combines long-standing tradition, boathouse culture and active water-sports participation across age groups.
History
The club was founded in 1926, and its boathouse was established in the former turbine building of the Heidelberg cement works. According to the club history, wartime disruption caused a temporary dissolution during World War II, followed by re-establishment in 1949. The association was entered into the register at the beginning of 1950, and after the return of the seized boathouse and boats, the boathouse was re-inaugurated in 1953. Construction of the Iqbal embankment in 1965 significantly changed daily club operations because the boathouse became separated from the Neckar. In 1975, sailing activities were expanded, especially youth training in Optimist dinghies. A major renovation in 2010/2011 modernized the clubhouse and boat hall, while the historical identity remains visible through the wooden canoe Hackteufel, christened in 1959 and still used for special occasions.
