Universitäts-Segelclub Kassel e.V.
The University Sailing Club Kassel e.V. (USC) is a non-profit sailing club serving Kassel and northern Hesse with nearly one hundred members including students, university staff and sailing enthusiasts from all walks of life. The main sailing area is Lake Edersee at Rehbach, where six club sailboats are moored at a jetty; in addition the club operates a Comet 700 for Baltic Sea trips from Eckernförde. The fleet includes wooden dinghies such as Pirat and Optimist, a Laser dinghy and cabin boats such as Varianta; boat maintenance takes place at the boat hall in Heiligenrode. The club offers comprehensive training for the sport boat licence, regular club evenings, sailing camps, Friesland cruising and in-house regattas – without its own clubhouse or dress code, but with shared boat use for members.
History
The University Sailing Club Kassel e.V. is an open sailing club for the Kassel region and northern Hesse that promotes sailing on a non-profit basis and enables affordable sailing without owning a boat. Over many years the club has built up a mixed fleet of wooden veterans and more modern boats; early boats included the solid-wood Pirat dinghies HINZ and KUNZ. In the 2010s the fleet was expanded, including the acquisition of a J/22 and later a wooden Lightning named Ostwind. Since May 2017 the club has sailed the Comet 700 MOLLY MOON on the Baltic Sea, initially as a guest mooring with Seglervereinigung Altona-Ovelgönne in Eckernförde; annual week-long trips, chain passages and delivery voyages – such as Stralsund–Eckernförde in 2022 – make this boat a central offering for coastal sailing. On Lake Edersee the club boats traditionally lie at the jetty in Rehbach; boat work, spring launching and autumn haul-out in October shape the annual rhythm. The USC maintains long traditions such as the sailing camp, May Day season opening, Friesland cruising at Ascension with chartered Polyvalks and in-house fun regattas. In the 2020s pontoons at the jetty were renovated, new boats such as the Sprinto were acquired and training as the Segel-Uni with sport boat licence courses was further developed. The club is also engaged in debates about Lake Edersee water levels and cooperates with Segelschule Rehbach for practical sailing training.
