Union-Yacht-Club Traunsee

Union-Yacht-Club Traunsee is a traditional sailing club on Lake Traunsee in Gmunden, combining lived sailing heritage since 1888 with active club life on one of Austria's most beautiful and demanding sailing waters. The club offers a clubhouse on the Esplanade, marina pontoons with berths, a crane, winter storage in Weyer, and a restaurant and club bar run as the club buffet. Regatta sailing, youth development from Optimist to classes such as 29er and 420er, and cooperation in the Traunsail team shape the sporting programme. Alongside sailing on Lake Traunsee with thermal winds and challenging conditions, community, club events and the preservation of a long club history are central to the UYCT.

History

Union-Yacht-Club Traunsee was founded on 15 August 1888 as the Traunsee branch of the Union Yacht Club established in 1886 and looks back on one of Austria's longest sailing traditions. As early as 1897 the club leased part of Ort Bay, the current UYC emblem was introduced in 1905, and the clubhouse was built and opened in 1913/1914. After renaming phases, admission to the German sailing federation in 1920 and the founding of the Austrian sailing clubs association in 1931, the UYCT became fully independent in 1950. The UYC Traditionsverband was founded in 1961. Over the following decades infrastructure on Lake Traunsee grew steadily: winter storage in Weyer, new pontoons, electronic locking systems, lifting equipment and repeated renovations of the clubhouse and piers. The club celebrated 100 years in 1988 and 125 years in 2013. Recent milestones include the new 3.5-tonne crane in 2023, renewal of pontoons Alpha, Bravo and Charly, purchase of the motorboat Pollux in 2016, and extensive renovations of kitchen, lounge and club grounds. The club thus combines historic sailing culture with modern club infrastructure on Lake Traunsee.
