Freie Vereinigung der Touren-Segler Grünau 1898 e.V. (TSG 1898)
TSG 1898 – Free Association of Cruising Sailors Grünau 1898 e.V. – is a long-established sailing club on Lake Langer See in Berlin-Schmöckwitz, with active racing and cruising programmes. The club-owned site includes a modern harbour with power and pump-out facilities, a boathouse, sail lockers and a clubhouse with catering and a terrace on the water. Strong fleets sail classes including O-Jolle, Optimist, ILCA and 420; the youth section trains on Saturdays from April to October in several Opti and ILCA groups. The club hosts major regattas such as the TSG Cup, Alfred-Wahrendorf Memorial, Geldner Prize and Edgar-Jambor Prize, plus in-house races, training camps and a lively social calendar. Founded in 1898, TSG is one of the defining sailing clubs in Berlin's watersports history.
History
On 1 October 1898, 18 sailors with 9 sport boats founded the workers' sailing club "Free Association of Cruising Sailors Grünau e.V." (TSG) for family sailing and racing. Together with Segelclub Fraternitas e.V., they founded the "Berlin Racing Sailing Association" on 5 March 1901. In 1903 the club leased a larger waterfront plot in Grünau and moved there; racing grew in importance. A harbour on the Dahme at Wendenschloss was established in 1912. During the First World War sailing almost ceased; the club then had 110 members with 38 sailboats. In 1920 the TSG leased a site in Schmöckwitz Forest and moved there in 1921. The clubhouse was founded in 1926 and inaugurated on 30 September 1928; a youth section was created the same year. After 1934 O-Jolle variants were developed and tested. The first jubilee celebration was held in 1936 and remains a highlight on the eve of the first Advent. The club survived the Second World War with little loss because boats were stored indoors. On 22 September 1946 TSG held the first post-war regatta with Soviet participation; in 1948 the Walter Geldner Memorial for O-Jolle was created and is still sailed annually. Until 1989 TSG sailors won 48 East German championship titles. In 1952 the "Sportgemeinschaft Grünau" was formed; in 1964 the Rossdeutscher Memorial for Cadets and the Walter-Arnoldi Memorial for Optimists were launched. In 1990 the club regained its historic name. Knut Wahrendorf won multiple European titles in O-Jolle; Harald Schaale became German champion in 20 sqm jollenkreuzer. A new harbour was built in 1996 and the site was purchased in 2004.
