History

Saarower Segler-Verein am Werl e.V. looks back on a long sailing tradition on Lake Scharmützelsee. Its roots lie in the sailing section of BSG Chemie Fürstenwalde, later BSG Pneumant; the club grounds had already been used for sailing before. In 1990 the present club was founded as Saarower Segler-Verein am Werl e.V. and has continued the tradition at the Werl ever since. The purpose remains the promotion of racing and cruising as well as theoretical and practical youth training. Over decades the club established regional and national regattas, including Scharmützelseewoche for Flying Dutchman, the Werlcup and long-distance and yardstick club championships. Since 2011 the club has owned the sailing cutter ZK 10, whose crew transferred from Seesportverein Hanseat Finkenherd e.V. The website has been continuously developed since 2018. In 2021 the club marked its 70th anniversary, in 2024 it hosted the International German Championship of the Kielzugvogel class, and in 2026 SSVaW celebrated its 75th birthday. Harbour upgrades, pile repairs, jetty work, youth development and an active club life shape the club today on Lake Scharmützelsee.
