Segel-Sport Flensburg-Harrislee e.V.
Segel-Sport Flensburg-Harrislee e.V. (SSF-H) is an active water sports club at Wassersleben harbour, about one kilometre northwest of Flensburg in the municipality of Harrislee. The club operates a modern marina with around 130 berths, shore power and Wi-Fi, its own winter storage and a clubhouse with kitchen, common rooms and sanitary facilities. The youth section trains several times a week in Optimist, Zugvogel and other groups, organises weekend trips and regattas and stays in contact with German and Danish fjord clubs. Founded in 1931 as Kanu-Sport-Flensburg and renamed in 1990, the club has shaped sailing on the Flensburg Fjord for decades and traditionally hosts the Cappy-Cup.
History
On 24 September 1931 nine men and three women founded Kanu-Sport-Flensburg e.V. with three boats in the Alt Flensburger Haus. Boat houses were built at Hotel Wassersleben in 1933 and 1934; the fleet grew to about 70 boats. After the fjord was closed in 1939 and clubs were banned in 1945, the club was re-established on 19 March 1946 with military government permission. The fjord reopened in 1950; small-boat sailing joined the programme in 1965. Harbour planning followed from the 1970s; Klaus-Peter Heldt became chairman in 1985. In 1990 the club was renamed Segel-Sport Flensburg-Harrislee e.V.; between 1990 and 1992 pier extensions, a stone mole and the new marina followed. From 1994 to 1996 the boathouse was converted into a clubhouse. In 2006 the club celebrated its 75th anniversary and opened a greatly extended clubhouse with roof terrace. An active youth section was built in 2007; in 2008 the club obtained contiguous winter storage. In 2011 it purchased the clubhouse plot. Major harbour expansion in 2012–2013 brought deepening, new moles, about 50 extra berths and inauguration on 22 June 2013; Cappy-Cup 2013 drew 108 entries. Bridges were renovated in 2018–2019 and a new mast crane installed. In 2020 an extraordinary general meeting elected Lutz Kätow chairman. In 2021 the club counted 106 active members and 48 juniors. In 2022 SSF-H hosted the Cappy-Cup with 60 boats. On the night of 20–21 October 2023 a storm surge of 2.22 metres above mean sea level ended the season: more than 13 boats were lost, piers were badly damaged and harbour damage reached around half a million euros. The club is approaching its centenary and remains an active sailing club on the Flensburg Fjord.
