SegelSportClub "Süßer See" e.V.

SegelSportClub “Süßer See” e.V. is a sailing club on Lake Süßer See in Seeburg in the Mansfelder Land lake district, about 15 km west of Halle (Saale) and 5 km east of Lutherstadt Eisleben. The club grounds lie in the north-eastern bay of the lake and cover roughly 7,300 square metres with clubhouse, boat house, jetty, slipway, berths and shelter for youth boats. Classes sailed include Optimist, Cadet, 420, Topcat, cutter ZK10, Flying Dutchman and 15er Jollenkreuzer; club-owned Optis, Cadets, 420s and Topcat K4 boats are available to members for training and regattas. Since its founding in 1976, youth work has been central, with taster courses, Saturday training, a summer training camp and the “Segler gesucht” initiative. The club hosts regattas with international participation, including Topcat events and the Whitsun regatta, and offers corporate events and guest sails on the restored wooden cutter ZK10.

History

The club was founded in 1976 as the sailing section of the company sports association of the VEG “Walter Schneider”. A boat house with meeting room was built on the grounds on the northern shore of Seeburg Castle; it was intended primarily to offer apprentices of the agricultural enterprise housed in the Seeburg boarding school sporting leisure activities. After German reunification in 1989 and the dissolution of the state-owned estate, the company sports association was transferred into the club “Eintracht Lüttchendorf” with football, riding and sailing sections. For financial reasons the sailing section left in 2001 and SegelSportClub “Süßer See” e.V. was founded. In the club a historic wooden cutter of type ZK10 was restored using traditional boatbuilding craft; since completion of the work in 2014 the cutter has been available to members and sponsors for shared sailing trips with crews of up to twelve. The “Dicke Blaue”, decommissioned in Rostock in 1967 as a Russian rescue boat and bought by the club, has since served as the regatta start boat. Today the club is one of several sailing clubs on Lake Süßer See, hosts regattas with international participation and aims to become a regional performance centre for youth sailing. Club teams took part among other events in the ZK10 cutter regatta at Kiel Week 2023 and the Topcat IDB 2023 on Lake Ammersee.
