Segel- und Surfclub Roth e.V.
Segel- und Surfclub Roth e.V. is an active sailing and windsurfing club on Lake Rothsee, about 25 kilometres south of Nuremberg between Roth, Hilpoltstein and Allersberg. Members use well-maintained club boats at water and shore berths as well as modern windsurfing and SUP gear free of charge and can reserve boats online. The clubhouse built in 1997 offers sanitary facilities, a shower, a lounge with kitchen, a windsurfing room, a terrace with barbecue and direct access to the lawns. The programme includes sailing and surfing for families and juniors, the annual Deubel Regatta, a summer festival and sailing training together with Segelschule Rothsee. Since its founding in 1977 the club has grown from sailing on smaller lakes into a firm fixture on the large Rothsee with more than 200 members.
History
Segel- und Surfclub Roth e.V. was founded on 18 August 1977. Eleven founding members discussed the idea in the kitchen of bakery Kiefer in Roth; the club itself was established at the inn „Am Kugelbühl“. Founding members included Helmut Bönigke, Manfred Geier, Rudi Hahn, Thomas Hörldt, Willi Kiefe, Karl Kießling, Knut Krachtowill, Klaus Krüger, Gerhard Nützel, Friedrich Wolzen and Johann Ziegler. Successive chairpersons were Rudi Hahn, Klaus Krüger, Helmuth Krätzer, Helmuth Werstatt, Manfred Berg, Reinhard Haas and Hans-Peter Hanhardt. By the end of 1978 the club already had 45 members and mainly sailed on Lake Dennenlohe and a gravel pond in Neuburg; theory courses for young sailors were held in the living room of „Surfsepp“. In 1979 Mayor Wambsgans christened the first dinghy Alpha Esse „Rothsee“. In 1980 membership reached about 100, a winter store near the Roth town brewery was set up, and the first surf regatta and town surfing championship were held. In 1985, around the inauguration of the Rhine–Main–Danube Canal by Franz Josef Strauß, the small Brombachsee became the club’s home; a first clubhouse was built by members in a former stable. In 1987 the club celebrated its 10th anniversary in the Schwanensaal in Roth. On 21 March 1989 flooding of the large Rothsee began, starting the move to today’s venue. By 1993 flooding was complete and the lake first usable. After grant negotiations in 1995 (town of Roth, district of Roth, BLSV; about 200,000 DM), groundbreaking for the new clubhouse followed on 1 July 1996; it was inaugurated in 1997 with Mayor Weiß. In 1998 the surfing section and youth work were reorganised, new sailing boats acquired and weekend catering duty introduced. Since 2000 the annual Deubel Regatta honours the late harbour master Rolf Deubel. In 2005 the club rented five berths at newly built jetty 3. In 2011 the surfing room was modernised; in 2012 the club launched its own website and a flyer. In 2015 a motorboat was added as support craft, in 2016 a slip trailer and a family-friendly sailing boat. In 2017 the club celebrated its 40th anniversary with the district administrator and mayor. In 2019 the terrace was renewed, a donated Conger was received, a Laser and Optimist were bought for youth sailing, and the Flying Cruiser got new sails. In 2023 another Laser was added, in 2024 the Topcat F2 catamaran, and in 2025 a new safety boat with engine. As of 31 December 2025 the club has 201 members.
