Schüler-Segel-Club Konstanz (SSCK)
The Schüler-Segel-Club Konstanz (SSCK) is the self-administered youth section of the Konstanzer Yacht Club on Lake Constance and ranks among the region's most tradition-rich sailing clubs. Founded in 1911, it is the sixth-oldest sailing club on Lake Constance and organises club life, regattas, finances and boat maintenance independently through its members. Young sailors aged 14 to 26 train in classes such as Optimist, J/70, ILCA, 29er, 470 and Finn Dinghy; in summer, training and regatta preparation take centre stage. The SSCK organises the annual Konstanzer Auftakt, supplies sailing teams for the KYC's German Sailing Bundesliga and offers an Optimist course during the summer holidays for children and teenagers.
History
The Schüler-Segel-Club Konstanz was founded in 1911 and is thus the sixth-oldest sailing club on Lake Constance; only the Lindau, Bregenz and Überlingen sailing clubs, the Royal Württemberg Yacht Club Friedrichshafen and the Konstanzer Yacht Club are older. From the outset the SSCK has preserved its independence within the KYC: club life, regattas, finances and boat care are organised by the members themselves. Many later world champions, Admiral's Cup winners and Olympic medallists learned the basics of sailing at the SSCK. The Konstanzer Yacht Club is a founding member of the German Sailing Bundesliga launched in 2013; after three years in the first division it was relegated to the second division in 2015, where it has remained in the upper third thanks in part to SSCK sailors. In 2016 the KYC hosted a Bundesliga venue in Constance. For many years the SSCK has provided a large share of the crew for the KYC Bundesliga team; since 2019 the club has also competed in the Junior Sailing Bundesliga. A fixed highlight in its own racing calendar is the Konstanzer Auftakt, organised by the SSCK every April. Today young sailors of varying ability and ambition aged 14 to 26 are active; tradition and a youthful self-image still shape the club.
