Société Nautique de Sète
Société Nautique de Sète is one of France's oldest sailing clubs, based in the heart of Sète's harbour on the Môle Saint-Louis at the historic Base Tabarly. Founded in 1863, the club combines tradition with an open programme of leisure sailing, cruising and competitive sailing on the Étang de Thau and the Mediterranean. Members benefit from club rooms, gear and boat loans, theoretical and practical training, and active participation in regattas and rallies including the Challenge de Thau. The club welcomes beginners and experienced sailors of all ages, with flotilla trips, Saturday training on Beneteau 25 boats and community formats such as the Vendredis de la SNS. A distinctive feature is its more than 160-year history beside the Môle lighthouse and Sète's role as a base for major racing teams at Base Tabarly.
History
Société Nautique de Sète was founded in 1863 and is among the oldest yacht clubs on the Mediterranean. From the outset it brought together sailors, fishermen and sailing enthusiasts around local regattas and the teaching of sailing. For more than 160 years the club has accompanied the development of the port and the city of Sète, adapting to new maritime uses while keeping its traditional anchorage. Its facilities and events helped establish Sète as a reference destination for sailing enthusiasts in France. At Base Tabarly on the Môle Saint-Louis, the city hosted America's Cup 2002 teams Alinghi and Victory Challenge before their departure for Auckland, and French Kiss in 1986 before leaving for Fremantle. Today SNS premises are in new rooms in the Port Sud de France building at the end of the Môle Saint-Louis near the lighthouse: one ground-floor room and two rooms on level -1. The club continues to promote respect for the sea, teamwork, knowledge transfer and an inclusive offer for all ages and levels, with modern club life, online membership and a website renewed in 2025.
