History

The idea of founding the club came from Erich Bertgen, who in 1954 after months of talks with sailors and motorboat drivers created the conditions. On 6 February 1955 the founding meeting took place; the statutes and first board were elected. Founding members were Erich Bakkerra (chairman), Carl-Friedrich Wacker (deputy chairman), Erich Bertgen (treasurer), Gerd Wacker (secretary), Brigitte Gaddum and Gustav Hempelmann; there was not yet a club grounds or harbour. In 1958 the annual general meeting on 18 April resolved to lease the previously loosely used grounds from Mr Pistor upstream of the ferry house at the reservoir; the first jetty was built there, members used the restaurant car park and reached their small grounds via the terrace. Among later chairmen, Karl-Heinz Bertgen in particular shaped the club for 33.5 years (1962–1995) and became an honorary member. Further chairmen included Wolfgang Limbach, Erwin Hils, Friedhelm Hercher, Achim Becker, Jörg Uth, Thomas Koch and Matthias Kary. The club grew into a first port of call on the Moselle near the Rhine confluence with club ship, harbour and strong youth work. In 2011 the German Sailing Federation and the German Motor Yacht Association named the SMC Club of the Year for its training. Since 2013 the annual project “Eulenkinder on board” with Metternich-Oberdorf primary school has taken place; under the DMYV initiative “Kids, kommt ins Boot” fourth-graders experience sailing and motorboating on the club grounds. Jetty renovations, annual season opening and closing trips, club cruises and events such as the Whitsun festival and Oktoberfest shape club life to this day.
