Segel- und Motorbootclub Glarnerland und Walensee

History

The history of the Segel- und Motorbootclub Glarnerland und Walensee goes back to the mid-1950s. In 1955 the first members' meeting took place with 29 participants; in 1958 the first sailing regatta followed. In parallel the harbour developed: in 1954 buoys were set in Weesen harbour, in 1955 a pontoon was built and extended in 1957. From 1962 the small harbour at Gäsi was dredged and made navigable again; in 1963 five buoys and a landing stage were added and the pontoon was moved from Weesen to Gäsi. In 1971 the Gäsi buoy field was inaugurated; by 1972 already 52 buoys were occupied. In 1972 the first club magazine appeared. In 1975 an extraordinary general meeting approved construction of a harbour facility; in 1977 the Gäsi harbour was inaugurated, followed in 1978 by the concrete mole. In 1978 junior sailing courses with club-owned boats began. In 1979 the club celebrated its 25th anniversary at Adler Schwanden and organised a weekend lake rescue service until 1985. Since 1980 an annual sailors' discussion evening has been held; since 1976 a charity cruise is organised each year. In 1983 joint club activities with SCoW began, and a wind measuring station was installed in the harbour. In 1988 some 2000 m³ of material were dredged; in 1990 a sponsor donated the sailing boat Neptun, and in 1991 a women's sailing course took place on Neptun. In 1995 harbour renovation and inauguration followed. In 1998 the club's own website went online. In 2004 the club celebrated its 50th anniversary at SGU in Näfels. In 2021 around 1000 m³ were dredged in the harbour, including at the guest pontoon and nearshore berths. Sailors from Lake Walen regularly compete in national and international regattas. Today SMCGW operates its own harbour at Gäsi with 130 berths for sailing and motor boats.
