Segelkameradschaft „Das Wappen von Bremen“ e.V. (SKWB) is a sailing club focused on ocean sailing and offshore training, with its office in Bremen. Unlike classic clubs, SKWB operates neither a clubhouse nor its own club harbour; club life takes place at sea, with ocean cruisers on the world’s oceans. The fleet includes the flagship „Wappen von Bremen“, the ocean yacht „Schlüssel von Bremen“ and the youth boat „Löwe von Bremen“ (Sun Fast 3600). Juniors train regularly for regattas and long passages; the youth section prepares sailors for the coastal skipper licence and Sportbootführerschein See and competes in ORC events and offshore races such as the Rolex Fastnet Race. Since its founding in 1934, Atlantic crossings, Cape Horn roundings and high-latitude expeditions have shaped the club – about 1,200,000 nautical miles already lie in the wake of its ocean cruisers.
History
Segelkameradschaft „Das Wappen von Bremen“ e.V. (SKWB) was founded on 19 April 1934 in Bremen’s Ratsstuben by 14 men as a yacht school. Chairman Hanns Ludwig von Lottner registered the club as Segelkameradschaft „Das Wappen von Bremen“ e.V. SKWB grew from the Weser section of the Kaiserlicher Yacht-Club under Dr. Franz Perlia of the Bremen yacht school. With the gifted gaff cutter „Onkel Hannes“ and the first „Wappen von Bremen“ (ex „Bille III“) the club expanded quickly. In 1936 „Roland von Bremen“ won the Bermuda–Cuxhaven transatlantic race during the Berlin Olympics. After World War II, Atlantic racing resumed in the 1950s. In 1968 „Wappen von Bremen II“ was built at De Dood; she reached Greenland in 1973 and rounded Spitsbergen in 1976, later continuing as „Apollonia“ after replacement by „Wappen von Bremen III“ in 1982. That same year „Roland von Bremen IV“ won Bermuda–Helgoland and in 1985 reached 81° 22.5′ N. With „Schlüssel von Bremen“ SKWB sailed the Whitbread Round the World Race in 1989/90; „Bank von Bremen“ circled the globe east-to-west in the Hong Kong Challenge 1996/97. „Wappen von Bremen III“ rounded South America including Cape Horn in 1999, reached 81° 25.27′ N in 2004 with mayor Henning Scherf aboard, and crossed the Atlantic 16 times in 33 years under the SKWB flag. The second „Bank von Bremen“ (2006) raced and trained until 2022; the fourth „Wappen von Bremen“ was launched in 2016 as an expedition cruiser. Today about 1,200,000 nautical miles lie in the wake of the club’s ocean cruisers.
