History

Segel-Kameradschaft Meersburg was founded on 28 September 1963 by 40 sailors in Meersburg. The early years already focused on sailing training and education, a tradition the club has maintained ever since. By 1967 SKM already counted 107 members and put its first club-owned boat – an H-dinghy – into service. According to the 1969 chronicle, outings reached a fleet strength of 13 keelboats, 17 dinghies and several rowing boats. In those early years the first cruises under the SKM banner were organised on the Baltic and North Seas, the Mediterranean and across the Atlantic. On home waters of Lake Constance, training for the A licence and seamanship was provided. Subsequent years were marked by a gradual eastward shift of berths as the shoreline was developed. In 1978 construction of the municipal harbour began; after its inauguration in 1979 it became the home port of the sailing camaraderie. Further building work in the 1980s and 1990s expanded the infrastructure and enabled the growth of youth work and school partnerships. SKM is a member of the German Sailing Federation and the Lake Constance Sailing Association. The club is registered and recognised as a non-profit organisation. For the 60th anniversary, events included the Hemdglonker anniversary club regatta and numerous club celebrations. Today the club boats include Glonke and Fabula (Bavaria 707) as well as dinghy classes for youth; shared cruises, fitting-out and laying-up, summer festivals and the Wednesday regatta with Yachtclub Meersburg shape club life.
