Segelgemeinschaft Waldsee e.V.
Segelgemeinschaft Waldsee e.V. is a sailing club founded in 1967 on the Otterstadt Altrhein near Waldsee in Rhineland-Palatinate and, with around 270 members, ranks among the larger clubs in the region. The harbour and club grounds at Rhine kilometre 411 offer berths and shore spaces for 120 boats, a clubhouse, a 5-tonne crane, dinghy slipway as well as parking, storage and camping facilities, and serve as a base of the DSV Cruising Division. Racing and cruising shape the programme alongside a youth section with club-owned Optimists and 420s, regular Saturday training and a summer youth sailing camp. The club has been awarded the Blue Europe Flag ten times in succession for exemplary environmental conduct; Olympic bronze medallists and numerous national successes have come from its ranks.
History
Segelgemeinschaft Waldsee was founded on 8 May 1967. In the founding year the first regatta, pier construction and admission to the German Sailing Federation followed; the first DSV regatta took place in April 1969. In spring 1973 the club bought its first Optimists; the same year Jürgen Paffrath finished 10th at the German 420 championships. In June 1980 the new harbour was inaugurated. Karlheinz and Wolfgang Schwab became youth European champions in the Corsair class in 1982 and European champions in 1984, 1987 and 1989. In June 1992 the SGW received its first Blue Environmental Flag; in 1993 the wave protection wall was built. Jan-Peter and Hannes Peckolt finished 13th at the 420 World Championships in 1999. In June 2001 the tenth Blue Environmental Flag was awarded. Further sporting successes followed: Felix and Eva Paffrath took 3rd place at the German 420 youth championships in 2003; the Peckolt brothers became German runners-up in 2003 and German champions in the 49er in 2004; the Schwab brothers became German runners-up in the Corsair in 2004. In 2005 harbour water depths were restored. Jan-Peter and Hannes Peckolt won Olympic bronze in the 49er in 2008. Today the club has around 270 members and is among the largest sailing clubs in Rhineland-Palatinate.
