Skipper Gilde Schwaben e.V.
Skipper Gilde Schwaben e.V. (SGS) is a sailing club on Lake Mooswaldsee northwest of Günzburg in the Swabian Donaumoos. The club grounds lie within a nature reserve on a 0.26 km² quarry lake and feature a harbour, clubhouse, slipway with electric winch and club dinghies. With around 260 members, SGS combines competitive sailing, active youth development and sociable club life. Regular regattas such as the May Regatta, Summer Regatta and Sauerkraut Regatta as well as youth and sport sailing certificate courses shape the programme. Founded in 1973, the club is a member of the German Sailing Federation and a fixture of the Günzburg sailing community.
History
Skipper Gilde Schwaben e.V. was founded in 1973 at Hotel „Glocke“ in Günzburg; Alarich Seidler became the first chairman and is regarded as club founder and later honorary chairman. What began with a handful of boats grew into a fixture on Lake Mooswaldsee. Early members used the peninsula at the old Mooswaldsee and built a small pier with buoys; after three years a wooden shed for gear and a dinghy followed. In 1978 the club moved to new grounds on the southwestern shore: first a provisional slip, then a boathouse and dry berths for about 30 boats. In the 1990s modest races became regular regattas listed in the Bavarian Sailing Federation calendar. In 1998 the town developed a land-use concept for the Donaumoos; water sports received a new 4,500 m² site. From autumn 2000 the old facility was dismantled and recultivated while harbour and clubhouse were planned and built; in 2003 Skipper Gilde inaugurated the new grounds. On 30 June 2012 a severe storm destroyed the north pier, parts of the south pier and all boats including the youth fleet. With donations and volunteer work a new pier opened in July 2013. In 2013 the club celebrated its 40th anniversary with the Sauerkraut Regatta and an open day; later followed the 50th anniversary. Today the club has about 260 members, belongs to the German Sailing Federation and offers harbour, clubhouse and an active regatta and youth programme on Lake Mooswaldsee.
