SGHW e.V. (Seglergemeinschaft Hohler Weg)
Seglergemeinschaft Hohler Weg (SGHW e.V.) is a sailing club on Lake Selent in Schleswig-Holstein, the second-largest lake in the state near Selent in the district of Plön. Members seek quiet on and around the lake, enjoy the clear water and socialise with family and friends on the club grounds in a landscape conservation and white-tailed eagle breeding area. Facilities include jetties with berths at the pier or ashore, garden shelters, picnic sets, a bathing ladder and a rescue boat maintained by the club. Club life is shaped by voluntary work parties, the season opening sail, summer festivals, club sailing and social gatherings; membership begins with a two-year probationary period. Founded in 1970, the club keeps costs low through self-help and regularly records water levels as well as events such as the 2024 jetty rebuild and flood episodes at the home harbour.
History
Seglergemeinschaft Hohler Weg was founded in 1970. Since then, sailing enthusiasts and nature lovers have gathered at Lake Selent, the second-largest lake in Schleswig-Holstein after the Great Plön Lake, near Selent in the district of Plön. The lakeside area is a landscape conservation area and white-tailed eagle breeding ground; fishing is not permitted. The sailing grounds range from gentle summer breezes to stormy days and suit windsurfers as well as dinghy, catamaran and keelboat sailors, though draught should ideally not exceed 1.0 metre because of fluctuating water levels. All work is done by members themselves or in work parties, which keeps sailing costs low. The grounds offer garden shelters (built in 2020 and 2021), picnic sets and a bathing ladder at water depths of 150 to 200 centimetres. Without subsidies the club maintains a rescue boat to support the Selent fire brigade in emergencies on the water. In 2024 the jetty rebuild was completed; that year and earlier saw major floods, including a record mark of 214 centimetres in February 2024 and a level of 202 centimetres in March 2022. Since 2020 the club website has continuously documented water levels at the jetty. Winter storage is not available; the grounds must be cleared by 1 December at the end of each season.
