Segelsportgruppe Dornier e.V.

Segelsportgruppe Dornier e.V. (SGD) is a sailing club on Lake Constance based in Immenstaad with its registered address in Friedrichshafen. The club grew out of a Dornier boatbuilding group and forms part of the Dornier company sports association; it enables sailing without owning a boat through a substantial club fleet. Facilities include a small harbour on the mole, shore and buoy moorings, a slipway, jetty, clubhouse with seasonal catering and a boat house. The programme features Tuesday evening sailing, Monday regattas, season opening and closing sails, club cruises, the Mole Festival with club regatta, and junior sailing for children and teenagers. Visitors can try the open Tuesday evening sailing; courses such as the Lake Constance skipper's licence are offered when demand and instructors allow.

History

Segelsportgruppe Dornier e.V. (SGD) emerged from a boatbuilding group that began building a Pirate dinghy in January 1958 in a corner of the Dornier experimental workshop. This marked the start of the oldest section of today's Dornier company sports association. In the early years the first three dinghies were built by the members themselves; the Föhr dinghy Fipps is still in use. In 1972 the Varianta Tobi became the first cabin cruiser. Since June 1972 SGD has been a registered association (Amtsgericht Ulm VR 630171). The club's home is Immenstaad on Lake Constance; its purpose is to foster sailing, especially for members without their own boats. Most members still come from active or former employees of Dornier successor companies, but the club is also open to other sailing enthusiasts from the region. Today SGD maintains a substantial club fleet including Optimists, Pirates, 470s, Dyas, Varianta and First 21.7 as well as the yacht Hermine (Dufour 1800) and flagship Wilhelm Busch II (X312). Together with members' own boats, around 175 vessels sail under the SGD flag. Infrastructure comprises a small harbour, shore berths on the mole, buoy field, slipway, jetty, a modern clubhouse of the company sports association and a boat house. At the general meeting on 6 March 2026 the board was re-elected: Dr. Jörg Wind remained 1st chair, Peter Fischer treasurer; Patrick Schubert joined as 2nd chair, Franz Bucher as equipment officer and Maurice Devoivre as secretary.
