Segelgemeinschaft Baldeneysee e.V.

Segelgemeinschaft Baldeneysee e.V. (SGB e.V.) is a non-profit sailing club on Lake Baldeneysee in Essen and was founded in 1965. The club presents itself as open, barrier-free and free of prejudice, with a socially integrative approach, and it is a member of the German Sailing Association. For members there is a limited number of water and shore berths as well as club-owned boats available free of charge, including a Varianta, an IF-boat and a Polyvalk; children and young people can start sailing on Optimists and later progress to 420s, 470s and Laser. During the summer months SGB organises, among other events, the Ladies Cup and the EU Cup as part of the Essen Sailing Week and also takes part in regattas run by other clubs on the lake. The clubhouse is the centre of club life and is used for meetings, training purposes and celebrations; according to the website, there is no public restaurant operation.

History

Segelgemeinschaft Baldeneysee e.V. (SGB e.V.) was founded in 1965 and traditionally emerged as a community of cruising sailors. From the very beginning the club was active not only on a wide range of waters, but also on its home water, Lake Baldeneysee. As a registered non-profit association with the local court in Essen, SGB is a member of the German Sailing Association. Club life is described as a shared responsibility: the facilities and infrastructure are operated and maintained by the members, and a public gastronomy is not part of the concept. Over the years SGB developed into a club with around 100 members that combines cruising with regatta activities, including the Ladies Cup and the EU Cup within the Essen Sailing Week. At the same time, sailing within the club is organised through club-owned boats and a clubhouse used as a meeting place, training venue and event space; in particular, children and young people can begin on Optimists and expand their experience later in further boat classes.
