Seglergemeinschaft am Müggelsee e. V.

Seglergemeinschaft am Müggelsee e. V. (SGaM) is a large sailing club on the northwestern shore of Großer Müggelsee in Berlin-Köpenick. The grounds lie a few metres from the Spree outflow and offer a sheltered harbour with berths for dinghies, cruising dinghies and yachts up to about ten metres, protected by a wave barrier at the head pier. The youth section Sailing Müggelteam trains in Optimist, 420 and ILCA 4, 6 and 7 and hosts several youth regattas each year up to the Berlin youth championship. Sport highlights include the traditional 20-hour race held since 1950, the Müggel-Cup and the Meer-Seen-Cup; the club also runs an active deaf sailing section.

History

SGaM was officially founded in 1990 and continues a long sailing tradition on Lake Müggelsee that began in 1894, when sailors from Berlin and Friedrichshagen founded Yachtclub Müggelsee (YCM). In 1908 the Regattahaus am Müggelsee club was founded. In 1937 Yachtclub Müggelsee merged with Seglerheim am Müggelsee (founded 1921) to form Yachtclub Müggel – Seglerheim. After 1945 various sports clubs emerged, including Sport-Gemeinschaft Müggelsee (SGM) from 1949. From these roots today's Seglergemeinschaft am Müggelsee was formed in 1990. The club now has around 300 members, including about 65 children and youths, and is among the largest sailing clubs in southeast Berlin. The traditional 20-hour race on Lake Müggelsee has been held since 1950 and reaches its 75th edition in 2026. Since 2022 SGaM has hosted the Meer-Seen-Cup; the Müggelschlößchen-Cup celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2023. Since 2014 the Berlin Skiff Bash has been a fixture; in 2019 SGaM hosted the German Open of the International 14 together with the Berlin Skiff Bash. Sailing Müggelteam grew from 33 to over 65 young sailors and became the leading training centre on Lake Müggelsee with about ten volunteer coaches.
