SG Einheit Brandenburg e.V.
SG Einheit Brandenburg e.V. is a traditional sailing club on the River Havel in Brandenburg an der Havel, with its club site at Grillendamm and the seasonal base Seeschloss on Lake Breitling. The club offers moorings and berths for sailboats and motorboats as well as guest berths for waterway travellers, sanitary facilities and the public restaurant Schifferstübchen on the club grounds. Club life and the sporting programme are shaped by regatta sailing, cruising and an active youth section sailing Optimist, 420, Laser and OK dinghy. The club hosts events such as the Brandenburg Regatta Days and the Gardena Cup and is registered with the German Sailing Association under number BG.039.
History
The history of SG Einheit Brandenburg goes back to its predecessor, Segelverein Brandenburg: from 1893 to 1921 the club rented boat stands in the harbour used by the Mette company; in 1921 it received the grounds from the city. On 1 October 1922 the new clubhouse was inaugurated; in 1927 the large shed and harbour facilities followed. In 1933 the club founded a youth section and acquired club dinghies. In 1945 severe war damage to facilities and boats interrupted development. Between 1945 and 1947 the few remaining sailors in Brandenburg worked to protect the damaged facilities from demolition. On 8 February 1947 the Free Watersports Community was formed, uniting watersports athletes from all former clubs for a new start. By 1949 the harbour and the western part of the shed had been restored and existing and salvaged boats repaired. In 1949 BSG Einheit was formed with the Free Watersports Community joining as the sailing section; on 24 July 1949 the first post-war regatta was sailed, and in 1950 the club went in convoy to Mecklenburg Sailing Week. In 1951 the eastern half of the shed was rebuilt; from 1951 to 1953 youth sailing restarted with newly acquired club Pirates. The club building was returned, and the club restaurant Schifferstube and club hall were fitted out. From 1957 members competed in regional and national regattas and championships in classes including 20er and 15er dinghy cruisers, H dinghies and Pirate. In 1961 Finn dinghies still allowed all-German competition at Berlin Spring Week. From 1969 to 1970 junior sport grew strongly with Optimist, Cadet, 420 and OK dinghies; the youth group reached 40 sailors. From 1973 limited coastal sailing began via contacts in Greifswald, Rostock and Berlin. In the 1970s and 1980s a youth shed was built and the harbour modernised. The 1990 season brought unrestricted sailing but also a decline in local activity and youth numbers. In the 1990s sewer connection, new sanitary facilities, shed repairs, slipway overhaul and the Seeschloss seasonal base for training, regattas and cruising were completed.
