Seglerjungenschaft Nürnberg e.V.
Seglerjungenschaft Nürnberg e.V. (SJN) is the oldest sailing club in northern Bavaria and has operated a sports boat harbour in the former raft harbour of Ochsenfurt on the River Main since the 1960s. The club offers moorings, a floating clubhouse on a former push barge, a reed hut and guest pontoons for cruising visitors. The youth section trains juniors starting with Optimists and provides seasonal Saturday sessions, in-house regattas such as the Blutwurstregatta, and cooperation for recreational craft licence courses. Founded in 1960 by Hans-Heinrich Hitzler as a training branch of the Adolf-Reichwein-Schule, the philosophy "We are not a marina" still shapes club life through members' own work on the harbour grounds.
History
In 1959 a hobby group for boat building and water touring formed among boarding pupils of the Adolf-Reichwein-Schule in Nuremberg, supported by teachers, parents and educators. On 10 June 1960 SeglerJungenschaft Nürnberg was founded; first chairman was boarding-school head Hans-Heinrich Hitzler (1929–2017), later honorary commodore. Early statutes admitted only pupils, former pupils, teachers and educators of that school. From 1960 to 1964 the first harbour was on a spit at Bischberg between Main and Regnitz with a fixed jetty and rustic camping without sanitation; by end of 1962 the club had 25 members. From 1965 to 1967 the fleet grew and moved to a gravel pit next to the Eibelstadt yard; by summer 1967 membership was 64. On 1 July 1967, after talks with the Free State of Bavaria and the City of Ochsenfurt, Hitzler leased the lower basin of the state harbour and began building the facilities; by end of 1968 there were 118 members. From 1970 to 1973 the youth section built a floating clubhouse on a 140-ton freighter. In 1973 land area was doubled by further leases; with more pontoons and a 3-ton crane harbour development was largely complete. At the start of the 1975 season SJN had 320 members and 130 boats. In October 1975 the 15th anniversary was marked with a sailors' ball in Nuremberg and the Blutwurstregatta; the club was then northern Bavaria's largest sailing club. Later, interest in lake sailing in Franconia reduced river sailing demand, so the club also opened to motor boating. Today the home port remains the former raft harbour in Ochsenfurt on the Main.
