Segel-Club Hansa von 1898 e.V. is a traditional sailing club in Lübeck with its main base on the Wakenitz waterfront and a second site at Schanzenberg on Lake Ratzeburg. The historic 1914 boathouse houses the sailors' mess, boat storage and a sailing school; at Schanzenberg there are bridges, berths, a clubhouse, race office and youth shed. The youth group trains regularly and uses club boats such as Optimist, Open Bic, ILCA, 420 and Hobie Cat; adults find race training and leisure sailing. With around 220 members the club hosts ranking regattas and offers community events on both sailing grounds.
History
Segel-Club Hansa von 1898 e.V. in Lübeck was founded in 1898 by five Lübeck craftsmen: Arnold, Koch, Kröger, Nehlsen and Zimmermann. They wanted sailing as leisure sport for ordinary citizens, while Travemünder Woche had drawn spectators since 1889. Founding members largely built their own boats – small keelboats or converted lifeboats – and first sailed on the Wakenitz; in summer boats lay at buoys near Wakenitz-Bellevue, in winter the veranda served as storage. In 1912 the club resolved to build its own boathouse, financed from 1913 via share certificates of 10 marks each; the boathouse was built in 1914. Milestones include the first Lake Ratzeburg regatta in 1912, joining the sailing federation in 1923, founding a youth group in 1927 and extending the boathouse in 1929. In 1933 the club was banned and the boathouse expropriated, readmitted under Nazi control in 1938, seized by British occupation forces in 1945 and returned in 1948. In 1949 the club leased the Schanzenberg weekend grounds on Lake Ratzeburg. Later stages: 75th anniversary in 1973, boathouse renovation in 1975, water supply in 1983 and electricity in 1987 at Schanzenberg, bridge destroyed by ice and rebuilt in 1986, sanitary building in 1997, centenary in 1998, clubhouse at Schanzenberg in 1999, new bridge in 2011, listing of the boathouse as a Lübeck cultural monument in 2022, and 125th anniversary with club chronicle in 2023. As a long-standing regatta host the club staged events such as the 1964 Korsar nationals, 1983 OK Dinghy IDM, multiple Varianta IDMs and pirate junior and IDM events.
