Dresdner Segel-Verein Pillnitzer Insel 1928 e.V. is a traditional sailing club on the left bank of the Elbe in Dresden-Kleinzschachwitz, sheltered in the side arm of Pillnitz Island at river kilometre 43. The jetty with power and water supply offers 18 to 20 berths; members also use two boat halls, a rail slipway, a club mess and sanitary facilities. The club promotes sailing and youth training, organises season opening and closing sails, work parties and social events, and welcomes guest berths by prior arrangement. Founded in 1928 in Laubegast, its history on the Upper Elbe includes flood recovery, self-built facilities and the planned centenary in 2028.
History
Dresdner Segel-Verein Pillnitzer Insel 1928 e.V. was founded in 1928 in Dresden-Laubegast as the boat section of the Fortschritt sports club; the first floating jetty of tree trunks lay below the shipyard. In 1933 the facility was moved to the Elbe backwater opposite Pillnitz Island, where the grounds remain today. In 1934 members built the first boathouse (today boathouse 1) themselves. After World War II in 1945, sport resumed with 29 members, later as a sailing section of the Zeiss-Ikon / BSG Motor Ost works sports club. In 1951 the club took over floatation bodies from the municipal baths authority; in 1954 the rail slipway was built. The club mess was erected between 1962 and 1964, and boat hall 2 between 1972 and 1974. In 1990, the year of German reunification, the club purchased the entire sports facility. The 2002 century flood (9.40 m gauge at Dresden) destroyed the mess and badly damaged technical and sanitary buildings and boathouse 1; in 2004 a new mess was inaugurated with support from the Free State of Saxony. Later milestones include slip rail renewal in 2011, a new entrance gate in 2022, oak beam jetty modernisation in 2025, and regular season opening and closing sails. Historically the jetty hosted single-handed dinghies and H-boats; the club still upholds its traditions and plans to celebrate its centenary in 2028.
