Segelsportclub Spremberg “Rot-Weiß” e.V. is a traditional sailing club on the reservoir of the Spremberg dam in southern Brandenburg, between Cottbus and Spremberg. The club grounds lie on the south-eastern shore and are reached via the village of Sellessen on signposted roads; facilities include a jetty with slipway, land berths, a race mast and a club mess with sanitary building. Classes sailed include Finn-Dinghy, 420er, Pirat, Ixylon, 15er Jollenkreuzer and the club cutter ZK-10 “Kuddel”; each year several club regattas and cruising trips on the Baltic and further afield are on the programme. Alongside racing, the three-day beach and summer festival with lantern cruise, campfire and fun regatta shapes club life; new members are expressly welcome.
History
Segelsportclub Spremberg was founded in January 1969 by sailing enthusiasts from Spremberg as a works sports community. The founders chose the Spremberg dam reservoir, built between 1958 and 1965 in southern Brandenburg, which serves flood protection for the Spreewald, industrial water supply and storage of groundwater from surrounding open-cast mines. Four years after the dam was completed, the shores still showed only pine woods and largely untouched beaches; the lake proved an ideally located home waters. Early boats were home-built craft as well as Cadet and Ixylon, plus Pirat, 15er Jollenkreuzer, Ausgleicher and three catamarans. In the following years a harbour with quay, floating pontoon for larger boats, land berths, race mast and slipway were created. In the early 1980s a sanitary building and a club bungalow with terrace became the club mess. Sporting life peaked in the 1980s with club regattas and regional events up to GDR championships and international races; club-owned 420ers supported youth work, and cruising sailors reached Mecklenburg waters, the Müritz and Poland’s Lake Boszkowo. The political change of 1989/90 reshaped club life: travel freedom and new waters temporarily pushed the home lake aside, until new boats and ideas revived activity. From 1989 the club has been run as Segelsportclub Rot-Weiß; in 2007 the cutter ZK-10 “Kuddel” joined the fleet. In 2019 the club celebrated its 50th anniversary with a festival on the reservoir. Today it has 38 members, sails several club regattas each year, joins events of friendly clubs and cruises as far as the Baltic, the Mediterranean and an ARC Atlantic crossing by one member.
