Segelschule Schlei e.V.

Segelschule Schlei e.V. is a non-profit sailing association on the Baltic fjord Schlei in Schleswig and, with more than 180 members, ranks among the city's larger clubs. Pupils and instructors meet for after-work sailing at rear pier 1 of the Akzent-Hotel Strandhalle, where five berths, an equipment hut with barbecue option and shared use of the hotel sanitary facilities are available. The programme is aimed at beginners and experienced sailors alike: theory and practice are taught on board, complemented by the annual club regatta, midsummer festival, Bosseln and winter meet-ups as well as courses for the coastal pleasure craft licence. Founded in 1985 by Peter Nicolai and continued as an association since 2005, the school cooperates with Schleswiger Segelkameradschaft e.V. in the Wiking South Harbour.

History

In 1985 Peter Nicolai, known as “Ursus”, founded Segelschule Schlei. According to former pupils, it began with a telephone under a plastic bowl, a few boats and a camper van as equipment store. Later the school grew into a boat hire with about 40 boats and a popular summer youth hangout. Even then, after-work sailing on Tuesdays and Fridays was a fixed part of sail and motorboat training. In November 2004 Ursus died unexpectedly. Pupils and instructors wanted to keep the offer and relaunched in 2005 as the non-profit association Segelschule Schlei e.V. with taken-over dinghies and two motorboats. After-work sailing still follows the Ursus principle: crews are formed at the pier, boats prepared and sailed onto the Schlei with an instructor on board. One dinghy bears the name “Ursus”. The Galeonen fleet was expanded by four Dutch keelboats (Skarl) and a Gruben 17 Sport; the dinghies received climate-friendly electric propellers. Until 30 September 2023 the school was based in Wiking North Harbour; from 2026 the base is pier 1 of the Akzent-Hotel Strandhalle in Schleswig.
