Segelgemeinschaft Hamburg e.V.

Segelgemeinschaft Hamburg e.V. is a non-profit sailing club that since 1991 enables sailors without their own boat to sail on Hamburg's Alster. Its home base is the pier at Bobby Reich at the northern end of the Outer Alster; the club fleet comprises two Kielzugvogel and two EFSIX keel dinghies, available daily from 9 a.m. until sunset during the season. Around 50 active and passive members meet in summer on Mondays from 5:30 p.m. at the pier, receive instruction and re-entry support, and may join the weekly Tuesday regatta of the Bobby Reich pier community. As a registered club affiliated with the Hamburg Sports Federation and the regional and German sailing federations in Hamburg, SGH offers professionally maintained club boats without compulsory work duties and preferential rates at partner sailing schools.

History

Segelgemeinschaft Hamburg e.V. (SGH) was founded in 1991 as a registered non-profit sailing club. From the outset, the aim was to enable sailors without their own boat to sail on the demanding Hamburg Alster and to share costs and responsibility. The club is a member of the Hamburg Sports Federation, the Hamburg regional sailing federation and the German Sailing Federation Hamburg. Its home harbour is the pier at Bobby Reich at the northern end of the Alster in Hamburg-Winterhude. Today around 50 active and passive members share four club boats: two Kielzugvogel (Alsterbrise and Alsterwelle) and two EFSIX keel dinghies (Alsterperle II and Alsterschwan). The boats are professionally maintained; membership fees include a work-hour flat rate, so classic compulsory work duties are not required. During the sailing season the boats may be used daily from 9 a.m. until sunset. In summer, interested sailors and members meet every Monday from 5:30 p.m. at the pier; outside the water season there is a gathering on the first Monday of the month from 6:30 p.m. at Bobby Reich. Sailing skills can be put to the test at the Tuesday regatta of the Bobby Reich pier community. New members receive thorough instruction at the pier and on the water; re-entry support is explicitly offered. Through partners such as Segelschule Pieper, AW Niemeyer, Steinmetz & Hehl and Segelschule Frank Lochte, members receive preferential rates for training courses, while a sailing licence is not required for membership.
