Segelclub Mainspitze e.V.

Segelclub Mainspitze e.V. is a non-profit sailing club in Ginsheim-Gustavsburg on the Rhine opposite Mainz. The pier lies in a quiet side section of the Gustavsburg industrial harbour at Rhine kilometre 496, with direct access to the Rhine and the current-free Acker basin. The historic sandstone clubhouse stands on roughly 20,000 square metres of grounds with dinghy meadow, slipway, two jetties, boat storage and a hoist. The club offers youth training, free taster sailing, regattas and courses for the inland and sea pleasure craft licences. Since its founding in 1963, the club has combined cruising and racing with active youth and inclusion programmes.

History

Segelclub Mainspitze e.V. (SCM) was founded on 11 September 1963 by eleven sailors and entered in the register of associations at the Groß-Gerau local court on 2 September 1964 under number 434. The non-profit club is based in 65462 Ginsheim-Gustavsburg, district Gustavsburg. The founders wanted not only to cruise locally but also to race against neighbouring clubs, which required membership of a DSV club. SCM belongs to the German Sailing Association and the Hessen Sports Federation (membership number H 002). The clubhouse is a concave two-storey sandstone building with a green roof, built around 1843 as a redoubt of the old Fort Mainspitze and used as troop quarters. Today members use it for social gatherings; the caretaker family lives on the first floor. The grounds cover about 20,000 square metres with storage for keelboats and dinghies, a covered work area, hoist and winter storage. The pier in Harbour IV celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2019. SCM has grown into a club with many cruising and racing sailors active on the North and Baltic Seas, the IJsselmeer, the Mediterranean and in national and international regattas. Special emphasis is placed on youth work with regular training and on inclusion: since 2018 there has been a lively partnership with Special Olympics Rhineland-Palatinate, and the club is listed as a best-practice example on the DSV inclusion page. The monthly members' meeting is held on the first Thursday of each month.
