Segelclub Kyffhäuser e. V.
Segelclub Kyffhäuser e. V. is a traditional sailing club on Kelbra Reservoir in the Goldene Aue at the foot of the Kyffhäuser mountains in Saxony-Anhalt. Facilities include a clubhouse with jetty and mole, a boat shed, and since 2025 a temporary alternative site with slipway for low-water periods. Classes sailed include Ixylon, Optimist, 420 and the club cutter ZK10, alongside training, Easter and Whitsun sailing days, and cutter trips for members and guests. The club hosts the Kyffhäuser Cup as an Ixylon ranking regatta and runs club races on Kelbra Reservoir. Founded in 1969 as a section of BSG Aufbau Heringen and continued from 1990 under its present name, the club combines racing, youth work and cruising.
History
In 1969 Kelbra Reservoir in the Goldene Aue at the foot of the Kyffhäuser was opened as a recreation area. Gerhard Schatz initiated a sailing section under BSG Aufbau Heringen with Günter Beck as sponsor. With Siegfried Berthelmann, training was organised; the works provided 19,000 marks for boats and setup. Members built a mole in their own labour (approved at 95,000 marks) and bought six Pirate dinghies in Berlin. Otto Gaede became section leader; club life began on the campsite, later the clubhouse was erected. In 1982 membership reached 93. In the 1980s juniors won many titles; in 1984 athletes competed at the GDR youth championships in Optimist and 420. A boat shed was built behind the clubhouse. In 1986 and 1987 BDS cup regattas were held on Kelbra Reservoir; in 1987 the Bund Deutscher Segler named the section exemplary. From 1990 the club continued as Segelclub Kyffhäuser e. V. Under Horst Wohlfahrt, Manfred Wirsig and Inge Wohlfahrt it survived reunification; around 70 members were recorded at times. The club cutter was rebuilt; in 1996 there were taster courses for a youth group from Göttingen. In 2000 and 2003 the club received the Blue Flag of Europe. From 2010 water-level drawdowns for flood and bird protection and later the COVID pandemic severely disrupted sailing. Under Kay Exel, Stefan Mildner and Ulrich Martin a temporary alternative site on the east side of the reservoir was built from December 2024 and opened on 27 June 2025, supported by the state and Lotto Toto Saxony-Anhalt.
