Segelclub Freistett e.V.

Segelclub Freistett e.V. is a traditional sailing club on Lake Petersee in Freistett (Rheinau), a quarry lake with direct access to the Rhine. The club grounds feature two slipways with electric winches, a clubhouse with toilets, a construction trailer for storage, and a jetty with power and water for cabin boats up to nine metres. A club dinghy and an Optimist are available for training; dinghy land berths can be used by members and, in limited numbers, by guests for an annual fee. The programme includes taster sailing, family sailing days, the annual school sailing club with Realschule Rheinau, and the municipal children's holiday programme. Since its founding in 1975 and its 50th anniversary in 2025, the club has been a firm meeting place for sailing enthusiasts on the Upper Rhine.

History

On 29 January 1975, eight sailing enthusiasts met in Freistett to form a community. The club's founding fathers are Rolf Meder, Fritz Hänßel and Gustl Jenne. Initially the club was launched as the sailing section of Schifferverein Oberrhein e.V.; later it became the independent Segelclub Freistett e.V. Starting with 15 members, the club quickly grew to around 30. From the outset the club was based on Lake Petersee in Freistett, a quarry lake with access to the Rhine. Over the years two slipways with electric winches, a clubhouse, toilets, a storage trailer and a club jetty with power and water were established. In 2013 the club boat Moby Dick was thoroughly restored; in 2016 and 2017 the northern slipway was renewed and the bank repaired. In the 2016 elections Achim Willems became 1st chairman; the club then had 32 active members and three youth members. Regular activities include sailing clubs with Realschule Rheinau, the municipal children's holiday programme, family sailing days, season opening and work parties. In 2017 the Fraunhofer IOSB Arggonauts tested equipment for the Shell Ocean Discovery XPRIZE on Lake Petersee. In 2024 the club installed a weather station on the grounds. In 2025 Segelclub Freistett celebrated its 50th anniversary with a gala and open day; the German Sailing Federation presidency congratulated with a certificate.
