History

Segelclub „Ahoi“ e. V. Schleswig was founded on 24 March 1928. Two years earlier, brothers Ernst and Adolf Stribirski (Joost) and Johannes Raup of the Freie Turnerschaft Schleswig (FTS) had converted a retired fishing boat into a sailing boat. When the fleet had grown to seven sailing and three paddling boats, the FTS watersports section was founded on 24 March 1928 with Ernst Joost as section leader. The aim was to open sailing as a sport for everyone in Schleswig, especially the working class. In 1931 the fleet already comprised ten sailing and as many paddling boats. That year 22 members founded the Ahoi boathouse association and began building a harbour and boathouse on leased municipal land in the Königswiesen; the facility was completed in 1932 through voluntary work, financed by a private loan of 1,350 RM secured against members’ household goods. Early boats were often converted navy cutters or lifeboats; later purpose-built boats followed, including converted Eckernförde coastal dinghies. On 14 April 1933 Segelclub „Ahoi“ e. V. Schleswig was founded independently of the FTS under 1st chairman Jörgen Andersen. The SA seized the boathouse and the club was banned. With the mayor’s help the boathouse association regained its property and Ahoi members temporarily joined the Schlei-Segel-Club (SSC). In 1935 a new bathing beach made the Königswiesen harbour unusable. The city offered replacement land at Luisenbad; together with SSC, SVS and the Domschule rowing section a watersports centre was created. In 1936 the second boathouse with club room, jetty and slipway was finished, holding about 25 boats. After World War II British authorities seized the boathouses and boats; Germans were barred from the Schlei until release in 1947. On 25 September 1945 the club was re-founded separately from the SSC. Chairmen included Jörgen Andersen, Hermann Clausen, Reinhard Maas (1947–1960), Heinz Schulz (to 1971) and Fred Raup. Later works included a verandah, the 1954 hall extension, renewal of jetty and slip in 1966/67, and a new club room with sanitary facilities in 1972. Sporting focus remains family cruising on the Schlei and trips to Denmark, Mecklenburg, Norway, Sweden and Finland. Regattas are mainly in-house; members also race elsewhere and in beach and ice sailing. The club helped organise Schleiwoche, junior championships, international H-Boot and Folkeboot championships and the 2000 German disabled sailing championship. In 1998 it co-founded the Schleimünde nature harbour association. Membership is about 150; 66 boats are registered, 40 of them at the Schleswig jetty.
