History

Segel-Club Würmsee Starnberg e.V. was founded in 1927 in Starnberg by a small group of sailing enthusiasts. The clubhouse has stood since the beginning in the Wassersportsiedlung at the northern end of what is now Lake Starnberg; the club name derives from the former name Würmsee, used until the official rename in 1962. The SCW grew from a merger of keen sailors in which experienced members mentored newcomers, enabling the establishment of the 20 sqm dinghy cruiser class in southern Germany. In 1955 the first youth group was founded, today one of Bavaria's largest youth programmes. In 1972 the present clubhouse with restaurant, sauna and sailors' lounge was opened and has shone anew since 1997. Championship successes include multiple German titles in the 20 sqm dinghy cruiser class (1968, 1973, 1976, 1977, 1982) and the 1977 European Dragon championship. Since 2010 the club fleet has been modernised from Optimists onward. Today the club has over 400 active members, more than 100 juniors and over 40 volunteer coaches, and hosts many regattas each year including Rambeckpreis, Rund Roseninsel, Kreuzer Cup, Victory Cup and Rüssel Cup.
