History

Segel-Club Salzgitter e.V. was founded in 1964. Four years later the founding members began building the clubhouse and pontoons on Lake Salzgitter. The sailing area is Lake Salzgitter, created from a gravel pit from 1960 and completed in 1975 at about 75 hectares of water. Until the 1980s only a few boat classes were admitted; club races often saw up to ten boats in a single class. Later the club opened up to more classes and yardstick scoring. Today it has about 4,000 square metres of harbour grounds, 56 water and 36 shore berths, a slipway and a crane for boats up to 1.6 tonnes. For decades Michael Klügel has represented the club internationally in the Finn Dinghy and OK dinghy; Nadja Kopp continued success in the youth national team and at world championships in the Europe class. Club juniors raced in the German Youth Sailing League on the J/70 and qualified for the second German Sailing Bundesliga for the first time. Each year the club hosts the regional Salzgitter Opti Cup among other events. It is affiliated to the DSV, the Lower Saxony sailing federation, the South Lower Saxony racing community and the Salzgitter district sports association. Membership is between 200 and 220.
