History

Segel-Club Niedersachsen-Burg e.V. looks back on more than 100 years of history (1905–2005). The founders around Ferdinand Brase sailed small boats on the Weser, Lesum and Hamme; a trip to Brake was still considered an adventure. Before the First World War, in 1913, the clubhouse was built on the Lesum dyke and still stands today. Many of the first members lost their lives in the First World War. In the Roaring Twenties membership rose rapidly to 800, and larger cruising dinghies replaced small dinghies. Until the Second World War, regattas were held every year and club members' victories were widely known. The clubhouse survived the war years almost unscathed and was returned to the members by the Americans in 1948. In the reconstruction years recreational sport grew; with figures such as first chairman Hans Weißbarth, yacht builder Burmester and Hans-Joachim Kulenkampff, SCNB became known far beyond Bremen. From the overall SCN association the individual clubs SCNB, SCNW and OSV emerged; membership of these clubs together still exceeds 500. Cruising dinghies later seemed rather small; keel yachts and larger motorboats shaped the picture. A tie requirement applied for a time. From the 1970s leisure habits relaxed; under first chairman Heinz Ahrens (32 years in office) the club and pier were greatly expanded – today more than 300 metres of dolphins. On the initiative of Walter Inselmann Senior, Weser-Jade Week was revived from within SCNB in 1975 and has been held annually since. More recently the club has gained a number of new and younger members and sees it as a task to keep the long tradition alive.
