Segelclub Nordsaar e.V.
Segelclub Nordsaar e.V. (SCNS) is an active sailing club with its office in Saarbrücken and home waters on Lake Bostal near Bosen. The club uses the sailing base of the Saarland Sailing Federation at Bosener Mühle with a race house, boat hall and jetties. Club-owned boats include Optimist, ILCA/Laser, 420, Hobie Cat, Varianta and Dyas; trial sailing and boat reservations are offered. Youth development with Opti and 420 training, youth sailing certificates and events such as Kangaroo Regattas and the Bostal Trophy are key. Founded in 1974 in Tholey, the club has become a fixture of Saarland sailing with around 290 members.
History
Segelclub Nordsaar e.V. was founded on 25 May 1974 at 19:04 in Tholey. Founding members included Günther Stoll, Alfred Eckert, Magdalena and Fritz Schweitzer, Hermann Loth, Manfred and Werner Weiler, Klaus Theis and Horst Kleinböck. The first statutes took effect with the founders' signatures; membership was initially capped at 60. Racing was the main purpose from the start. On 20 April 1975 the young club held its first regatta at Losheim reservoir in the Korsar, 420 and 470 classes with 43 boats. A year later four regattas followed in Losheim, including a ranking event for the 470. In September 1977 five juniors first joined an LVSS camp in Mittersheim. Still in 1977 the club moved to Lake Bostal, where construction of the sailing base in Eckelhausen Bay had begun in 1976. SCNS helped with earthworks, shore protection, slipways, access road, fencing, jetties and wooden buildings for race house and lounge. In 1982/1983 today's race house with sanitary facilities, changing rooms and dormitories was built. A pirates' ball was first held in 1981; from 1985 the summer festival with club championship followed. In 1999 the club celebrated its 25th anniversary. Chairpersons included Günther Stoll, Kurt Karthein, Erwin Backes, Peter Beuscher, Jürgen Peter Johannsen, Leonhard Mayer, Armin Krächan and since 2016 Christine Schaal-Lehr. Membership grew from 25 (1974/75) via 160 (2001) and 250 (2010) to about 290 today, including around 60 juniors. Today the club organises Kangaroo Regattas, the Bostal Trophy, Dyas and handicap racing and supports events such as Special Olympics on Lake Bostal.
