Schweriner Marineclub e.V.
Schweriner Marineclub e.V. (SMC) is a maritime sports club on the northern shore of Lake Heidensee in Schwerin, with a focus on ZK 10 cutter sailing. The grounds include a clubhouse, a pier with 35 berths in total, and club-owned sailing cutters, a traditional Zeesboat and Optimist dinghies for juniors. Alongside regattas, trial sails and charter offers on Lake Schwerin, the club runs an active youth programme including a summer sailing camp. Since its founding in April 1990, the club has won the German cutter sailing championship several times as well as state championships, and in 2026 it is again co-hosting the German championship in Schwerin.
History
Schweriner Marineclub e.V. (SMC) was founded in April 1990. Its aims include promoting maritime sport, teaching seamanship and preserving maritime traditions. Special emphasis is placed on children and youth work, organising grassroots competitions and taking part in state and national events. In 2004 the club was able to build a new clubhouse on its own land; members invested considerable time and effort in the building and a new pier on the northern shore of Lake Heidensee. The club owns six sailing cutters and one Zeesboat. SMC crews have won the German cutter sailing championship five times and the state championship on several occasions. After restoration, the cutter “Pamir” was christened on 1 May 2018 and later took second place in the ZK 10 class at the October regatta in Bautzen. SMC hosted the marathon regatta for the 35th time; in 2026 Schwerin will again stage the German cutter sailing championship (11–13 September), after previous editions in 1996, 1998, 2003 and 2009, with SMC as lead organiser together with Schweriner Segler-Verein von 1894 e.V. and Mecklenburger Seesportverein Schwerin. With support from the German Foundation for Engagement and Volunteering, the RIB “Stella Mare” was acquired and christened in April 2026 by Minister-President Manuela Schwesig; the Sparkasse Mecklenburg-Schwerin foundation funded new sails for the cutter “Padua”. The club currently has 95 members, including 22 children and young people, and is a member of the state and national maritime sports associations, the state sports federation of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the Schwerin youth council.
