History

Schüler Segeln Schleswig-Holstein e.V. was founded in 2004 with the aim of giving pupils in Schleswig-Holstein experience of the sea and bringing sailing within their reach. The central project is a statewide fleet of identical team-acht boats used at sailing base stations run by partner schools. The seventh boat, "Sea our future", was handed over to the association on 23 March 2012 after two years of construction at the vocational training centre at the Kiel Canal under Andreas Sick – a milestone in which pupils built for pupils. On 4 May 2013 the eighth boat "Murmel" was launched at Segelclub Eckernförde and handed over to the Eckernförde base station. For the 10th anniversary in 2014 a student regatta with 120 pupils in 12 teams was sailed off Schilksee. In subsequent years the fleet grew further; for the 2018 season nine team-acht boats were available, and more than 2,000 young people at 25 schools in Flensburg, Kiel, Eckernförde, Rendsburg, Timmendorfer Strand, Neustadt and Wedel took part in lessons on board and ashore. The annual SchülerCup became a firm tradition with on-water competition, shore programme and cake judging, initially off Schilksee and later also at Rathje Werft in Kiel-Friedrichsort. Teams from all over Schleswig-Holstein compete there; in 2015 around 100 pupils aged eight to 19 travelled to take part. The association's boats regularly take part in the Aalregatta from Kiel to Eckernförde and back. In the corona-affected 2020 season almost all boats were laid up ashore; the association used the forced break for overhaul work on the fleet. On 31 May 2023 the new Schleswig sailing base station was founded with the launch of the boat "Cecilia Litle" for Domschule Schleswig. The mould for team-acht boats had been stored for over ten years at Lindenau Werft in Kiel-Friedrichsort; after the yard was sold and the hall had to be cleared, it was transported by pontoon from Kiel to Kappeln in 2023, where Henningsen & Steckmest built the anniversary boat. In 2024 the association celebrated its 20th anniversary; at the Jubi-SchülerCup on 18 September 2024 Minister President Daniel Günther opened the regatta at Rathje Werft as patron, and Klaus Karpen was awarded the honorary pin of Sportverband Kiel. In the anniversary year construction of the tenth team-acht boat was initiated; "Lütt Gorch Fock" was launched in Kappeln on 11 September 2025 and welcomed into the fleet at SchülerCup 2025 on 17 September.
