Segelclub Schwäbisch Gmünd e.V.
Segelclub Schwäbisch Gmünd e.V. is a sailing club founded in 1982 and based in Schwäbisch Gmünd that organises sailing mainly through shared charter cruises on Lake Constance and in international waters. Membership does not require owning a boat; the focus is on sailing together and social gatherings, including a regulars' table on the third Thursday of each month. The club supports training for the Lake Constance skipper's licence, skipper courses, radio certificates and SKS, and offers theory courses for the Lake Constance skipper's licence. With around 40 members and traditional season-opening and season-closing sails, it forms an active cruising community far from its own lake.
History
Segelclub Schwäbisch Gmünd e.V. was founded in 1982. Early chairpersons in the club chronicle included Manfred Bareis (from 02.04.1982), Manfred Kunz (from 12.05.1987), Kurt-Georg Flagmeyer (from 21.01.1993), Thomas Wagner (from 15.02.2001), Gunter Beck (from 20.01.2005), again Manfred Kunz (from 19.04.2007), Wolfgang Schubarth (from 18.02.2010) and again Manfred Kunz (from 16.02.2012). Manfred Kunz shaped the club for a total of 15 years as first chairperson and taught Lake Constance skipper's licence theory at the adult education centre in Schwäbisch Gmünd. In February 2018 he stepped down; Rudolf B. Schäfer became the new first chairperson. A club website has accompanied the association since 2007; around October 2018 and September 2019 the site was redesigned with a new logo. In September 2019 the club organised its first offshore charter cruise to Greece. In February 2020 the general meeting decided to end memberships in higher associations; in June 2020 the board implemented this and redirected freed funds into instructor and training support. Since then, regular season-opening and season-closing sails on Lake Constance as well as international charter cruises (including Greece, Croatia, Sardinia and Italy) and houseboat tours have defined club life. Manfred Kunz died on 8 March 2024.
