Segelclub Traunkirchen
Segelclub Traunkirchen (SCT) is a non-profit sailing club on the western shore of Lake Traunsee in Traunkirchen, Upper Austria. The clubhouse stands conspicuously “in the water” and provides berths, harbour and crane facilities as well as parking and boat storage for members. Youth classes such as Optimist, ILCA and Splash are sailed alongside keelboat classes including Kielzugvogel, Finn-Dinghy, Yngling and Shark 24; an SCT team also competes in the Austrian Sailing Bundesliga on J/70 boats. Free taster days, a youth week, regular junior training and in-house formats such as Fun Friday shape the programme for children, teenagers and adults. Since its founding in 1966 and admission to the Austrian Sailing Federation in 1968, the club has grown to around 282 members and become a fixture of the Traunsee sailing scene, hosting annual events such as the Traunkirchen Sailing Days and the Reinanken Cup.
History
The SCT was born in 1966 at a small Korsar regatta with six participants. Young Traunkirchen Korsar sailors decided to deepen their activities and promote training. In the winter of 1966/67 the first sailing courses were held at Rasthaus Ettinger. In May 1967 the Yacht Club Traunkirchen was founded, attracting sailors from Gmunden, Altmünster and Ebensee. Mr Hinterberger’s summer house next to the then marshy Bräuwiese served as the first clubhouse. In 1968 the name was changed to Segelclub Traunkirchen for admission to the ÖSV; the first International Traunkirchen Sailing Days marked the move into popular sailing. Within two years membership reached about 100. In 1970, after negotiations with nature and water authorities, construction of the clubhouse, crane and harbour was approved; with a budget of 4.5 million schillings and over 1,000 m³ of earth moved, the facility was largely completed by 1971 and officially opened in 1972. Later the club attempted a Korsar regatta in Rovinj on the Adriatic. For the 30th anniversary in 1999 a breakwater was built to protect the pile-built clubhouse and a crane was installed. The roof was renewed in 2012; in 2018 a new entrance portal and restaurant kitchen renovation followed. Early ideas for today’s Yacht Club Austria were formed in the SCT boardroom; the club burgee was also designed here, and with Klaus Krieger’s ketch “Komet V” the first coastal B-licence training took place. Today the club has 282 members and looks back on 56 years of success.
