Segelclub Flakensee e.V.
Segelclub Flakensee e.V. is a traditional sailing club on Lake Flakensee in Woltersdorf near Berlin and celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2025. The grounds lie opposite the Woltersdorf lock and give access to neighbouring lakes and Berlin waters. With 46 wet berths, summer and winter storage, a boat hall, a club workshop and a reconstructed slipway, the club offers solid harbour facilities. An active youth section with licensed coaches and club-owned Optimist and 420 dinghies supports beginners; adults find racing and cruising. Several club regattas are held each year, including Maibowlenregatta, Räucherlachsregatta and Blaues Band vom Flakensee, plus the traditional Whitsun cruise. With about 110 members, SCF is an established sailing club in the Oder-Spree district.
History
On 1 March 1955, 13 sailors founded SG Einheit Woltersdorf at a lakeside café on Flakensee; key figure Harald Dorau, former head of the Vilm offshore sailing school, brought the first boats. The municipality provided overgrown land in the northern bay that members cleared themselves; by 1957 membership reached 40. In 1961 the club moved into the FLAWA boathouse with a large shed and dwelling house, building a pier, slip winch, workshop and motor shed; a club restaurant and later a skippers’ lounge were created – today the Klabautermann restaurant is located there. That year the club became a section of BSG Chemie Erkner with support from VEB Plasta and VEB Teerwerk; in the 1970s the clubhouse was renovated with a sanitary wing and membership rose to about 180. Between 1963 and 1965 the offshore yacht Berliner Bär was built under boatbuilder Walter Moritz and designer Werner Siegel; after launch followed an eight-month Mediterranean cruise from October 1965 to May 1966, later described by Karl Behrend. Afterwards Berliner Bär sailed mainly in the Baltic, later also to Norway and England; from 1965 to 2017 about 207,000 nautical miles were logged before the yacht was sold in 2017 and is now in Polish ownership. Since 1990 the club has been independent again as Segel-Club Flakensee e.V., currently with about 110 members and 10 to 15 children and youths. Youth work dates to 1962 when Walter Moritz built the first of 11 Cadets; from 1966 juniors competed at Spartakiad and youth championships, and from 2013 the Berliner Bär regatta for Optimist and Cadet returned. In 2015 the chronicle “60 Jahre Segelclub am Flakensee und 50 Jahre Berliner Bär” appeared; in 2019 “Törns mit dem Berliner Bär” was published by edition bodoni. Today the club hosts seven regattas a year and maintains Whitsun cruises and a winter hike; the slipway was reconstructed in 2002.
