Segel- und Wassersportverein Weißenstadt e.V.

Segel- und Wassersportverein Weißenstadt e.V. (SWVW) is the sailing club on Lake Weißenstadt in the Fichtelgebirge region of northern Bavaria. The venue's favourable wind conditions suit both relaxed cruising and competitive racing in classes such as 420er, Finn-Dinghy, ILCA 7, Optimist and Teeny. The sailing grounds offer a clubhouse, weather station and webcam; the season is shaped by club regattas including the PEMA Cup, spring and marathon regattas. The youth section runs training on club boats from May to September, plus sailing camps and junior sailing licence courses. Adults can obtain inland and sea sport boat licences each year, with training mainly on Conger dinghies. Founded in 1974, the club celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2024 and also maintains its own shanty choir.

History

Segel- und Wassersportverein Weißenstadt was founded in 1974 and has sailed on Lake Weißenstadt in the Fichtelgebirge ever since. The club mainly races 420er, 470er, Finn-Dinghy, Laser (ILCA 7) and numerous cabin boats. Each year it offers sport boat licence training for inland and sea waters, practised mainly on Conger dinghies. From early May to late September regular youth training takes place on club-owned 420er, Optimist, Teeny and Laser boats; non-members are welcome for trial sessions. Numerous events and regattas such as the spring regatta, marathon regatta, PEMA Cup and summer regatta strengthen club life. In 2024 SWVW marked its 50th founding anniversary while its shanty choir turned 30. The growing youth section runs Optimist courses, sailing camps and the „Segeln“ school project at Jacob-Ellrod-Realschule Gefrees. Over the decades the club developed active racing, a sailing clubhouse and modern youth programmes including junior sailing licences and discounted inland boat licences for juniors.
