Segler-Vereinigung Unter-Havel e.V. (SVUH) in Berlin-Spandau is a long-established sailing club on the banks of the River Havel with views of the Grunewald Tower. The home harbour offers around 70 berths for boats from 6 to 12 metres, a clubhouse with terrace, boat crane, mast crane and slipway; members without their own boat can borrow club boats such as H-Boot, Sailhorse, Pirat and Laser. Four club regattas per year, Funstick races, the Sailhorse Eurocup and the Aerocup shape the racing programme, while cruising, workshops and cruising sailors' evenings complement the adult offering. The active youth section trains every Friday from 4 p.m. with Optimist, Laser and 29er, runs summer camps and is a member of OPTI CLASS GER with the LSB child protection seal. As a base of the Schiffergilde zu Berlin, an extensive course programme is available at favourable rates; guest berths are welcome after prior arrangement with the harbour master. Since its founding in 1917, the club has united around 200 sailing enthusiasts in a lively club community on the Berlin sailing area from the Havel via Lake Wannsee to the Glienicke Bridge.
History
Segler-Vereinigung Unter-Havel e.V. was founded in 1917 as Kleinsegler-Vereinigung Havel with the well-known SVUH burgee. The Berlin small-boat sailing clubs emerging at that time aimed to make dinghy sailing accessible to a wider audience. Until then, sailing had been reserved for wealthy citizens with expensive racing yachts who were members of a few prestigious clubs. In 1923 the club joined the German Sailing Association. On 16 May 1928 Kleinsegler-Vereinigung Havel merged with Segel-Vereinigung Unter-Havel, founded in 1920, and has since borne the name Segler-Vereinigung Unter-Havel (SVUH) with the established blue-and-white burgee. In 1928 the club purchased the property at Scharfe Lanke 133b in Berlin-Spandau. After wartime suspension of club life in 1944, re-establishment under British military command in 1947 and recovery of club assets in 1951, the present clubhouse and harbour facilities were built by the club itself in several stages. Club buildings and harbour facilities are continuously modernised; all members contribute actively, so much is still achieved through self-help. Today SVUH is home port for approximately 70 boats and around 200 sailing enthusiasts of all ages. The club is a member of Deutscher Segler-Verband e.V. (DSV reg. no. B 030) and Berliner Segler-Verband e.V. SVUH is a base of Schiffergilde zu Berlin; the Schiffergilde burgee is flown at the SVUH flagpole. Members benefit from the Schiffergilde's extensive course programme at reduced rates through the club's status as a base. In recent years the club has significantly expanded its sporting activities, organising four club regattas per year as well as Funstick regattas, the Sailhorse Eurocup and the Aerocup, and received the LSB child protection seal for its youth work.
