Seglerverein Rahnsdorf 1926 e.V. (SVR) is a long-established sailing club on the eastern shore of Lake Müggelsee at the Rahnsdorf Banks in Berlin. The club has around 100 active members and a large youth group of about 30 young sailors, with its own site including a half-timbered clubhouse, harbour with two pontoons, boat sheds, sanitary building and slipway. Racing classes include Optimist, ILCA, 420er and O-Jolle; the club hosts the Rahnsdorf Opti Cup, 420er Cup and Müggelpokal for O-Jolle each year. Children from age seven train weekly on the water, in the sports hall and at training camps; adults enjoy regatta and cruising on inland waters and the North and Baltic Seas. In 2026 the SVR celebrates 100 years since its founding on 13 July 1926 by 21 sailing pioneers.
History
Seglerverein Rahnsdorf was founded on 13 July 1926 by 21 sailors, partly from the Tsimulpo interest group. With little money but great courage, a waterfront plot was acquired at the Rahnsdorf Banks on Lake Müggelsee; the shallow banks with their lagoon character offered ideal conditions for a sheltered harbour. In 1927 the club became the easternmost base of the Free Sailors' Association on the lake. Over the following years a boat hall, changing rooms and a half-timbered clubhouse with canteen were built through voluntary labour. By 1929 the club had 30 members and 20 sailing boats; in 1932 the SVR ranked third in regatta participation in Berlin's eastern group. The Second World War interrupted club life; after the war the state took over the site in 1947, and until 1990 Rahnsdorf sailors competed under changing names as works sports sections. From mid-1990 the original club name was restored, and in 1999 the club grounds were officially returned. Youth sailing always took centre stage; the Rahnsdorf sailing school produced many champions in Optimist, Cadet, OK-Jolle, 420er and Laser, and in 1992 the club received the Green Ribbon for exemplary talent development. Highlights range from the 1974 FD world title of Ilja Wolf and Bernd Klenke through GDR champions and Spartakiade winners to three Olympians: Alexander Baronjan (windsurfing 2000), Lucas Zellmer (470er 2004) and Robert Stanjek (Star 2012, world champion 2016). Henry Hübener, German Optimist champion 2025, learned to sail at the club. Each year the SVR hosts the Rahnsdorf Opti Cup, 420er Cup, Jollen Cup and Müggelpokal for O-Jolle. The club organised and paid for dredging the entrance to Lake Müggelsee. In 2026 the SVR looks back on 100 years of club history.
