Segler-Vereinigung Mannheim e.V. (SVM) is a traditional sailing club that has been sailing in Mannheim since 1931 and has more than 400 members. Club life spans three bases on Rhine backwaters: Mannheim on the Sandhofer Altrhein with the club ship Dordrecht, Otterstadt on the Otterstädter Altrhein, and Reffenthal on the Angelhofer Altrhein. All sites offer water and shore berths; Otterstadt also has a clubhouse with lounge and sanitary facilities and is the youth section’s home base. The sailing school provides practical training from junior certificates through inland and coastal pleasure craft licences to SKS and radio certificates; young sailors train among others in Optimist, Teeny, 420 and ILCA, complemented by camps, leisure trips and club regattas. A distinctive feature is the former Rhine paddle steamer Dordrecht, rescued in 1957 as the club centre, together with a strong Varianta fleet and active cruising and model sailing.
History
Segler-Vereinigung Mannheim e.V. has been sailing since 1931 and today, with more than 400 members, is among the leading sailing clubs in the metropolitan region. The club is registered at the Mannheim district court under VR 37 and is a member of the German Sailing Association. The club centre is the former Rhine paddle steamer Dordrecht, built in Mannheim in 1922. After decommissioning, the club rescued the vessel in 1957 from scrapping and converted it into a sailing facility. In 1998 and 1999 the hull and interior were thoroughly overhauled; before the centenary celebration members repainted and modernised the Dordrecht. Club life grew across three venues: Mannheim on the Sandhofer Altrhein, Otterstadt on the Otterstädter Altrhein and Reffenthal on the Angelhofer Altrhein. The sailing school has trained members and non-members for about 50 years. Many members sail the Varianta class; SVM belongs to the Varianta class association Südwest. The youth section of about 20 children and teenagers trains at Lake Kollersee and takes part in regattas and an annual camping trip. The club also maintains cruising on coastal and inland waters and international RG 65 model sailing in front of the Dordrecht.
