Segelverein Weserbogen e.V.
Segelverein Weserbogen e.V. is an established sailing club on the Middle Lake of the Großer Weserbogen in Porta Westfalica, near Minden, Porta Westfalica and Bad Oeynhausen. Since its founding in May 2004, the club offers sailing lessons and active club life with a club jetty, boat fleet and club-owned sailing boats plus life jackets for members. Key focuses include training for the inland sport boat licence, DSV youth sailing certificate courses during summer holidays, and an active youth section sailing Optimist, Teeny, ILCA 7 and 420er boats. Members sail with club or private boats; guest trial sailing is available by appointment. Traditional events such as opening-of-season sailing in April and closing-of-season sailing in October, plus summer festival and Christmas party, shape the season at this scenic venue at the foot of the Wiehen Hills.
History
After the former operator of the sailing school at the Großer Weserbogen in Porta Westfalica moved to Hamburg in 2004 and the yacht club he founded was dissolved, a group of enthusiastic sailors took over the existing jetty with 16 berths and several boats on the Middle Lake. Talks with the recreation area operator showed that continued sailing use was welcome, but a lease for lake usage rights would only be concluded with a registered club. On 5 May 2004, Segelverein Weserbogen e.V. was founded; seven members signed the founding protocol and club statutes. In winter 2004/2005, existing boats were thoroughly overhauled by members and the club jetty was improved – without grants from regional sports associations or public bodies. Since then the club has continuously invested in its boat fleet and jetty; in 2014, 2017 and 2018 nearly all jetty planking was modernised and a new jetty section built. To date the club has introduced around 1000 children aged 7 to 13 to sailing in summer holiday courses and enabled them to obtain the DSV youth sailing certificate. About 700 students were trained for inland and sea sport boat licences and the semi-official coastal yacht licence in the same period. In 2024 the club celebrated its 20th anniversary with a festival weekend, regatta and trial sailing at the club jetty. Since April 2025 it has officially cooperated with Weser-Gymnasium Vlotho for a school sailing group. After winter flooding 2023/2024, jetty damage was repaired. The club now has about 120 members, including 23 juniors.
